What is Anti Locking Braking System (ABS)?

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) comes quite handy when you are driving on slippery surfaces (like ice, packed snow, gravel, steel plates and bridges). This safety system not only prevents locking up of wheels but can also control their rotation during hard braking in emergencies. The ABS has an ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and wheel speed sensors, one each for all the four wheels. The anti-lock Braking System applies and releases braking pressure upto 30 times a second which helps the driver of better control and eventually stopping the car in a straight line. While the ABS is a necessity, it can also provide a false security for a driver who takes it for granted and goes for that extra speed thrill when not required.
