Caues and Treatment of Chapped Skin Conditions

Chapped skin is a condition where the skin becomes very dry with cracks formation caused due to exposure to very cold weather. When the temperature is very less, the sebum oils are secreted in very low amount by the sebaceous gland. Thus they fail to give protection to the skin and make it dry because of no lubrication. When this skin is exposed for long periods of time to the chilly weather, then the skin becomes reddened and cracks may also start to appear. In this condition this skin is very sensitive to strong soaps.

Treatment for Chapped Skin:

When the temperature is low and the weather is dry, it is advised to use less soap for washing. A bath oil can be applied prior to bathing. Afterwards lotion or cream can be applied to protect  the skin by maintaining moisture on the skin and prevent the damaging effects of wind and cold. Cleansing cream can be used instead of soaps for chapped skin. At night also lotion can be applied which contain lanolin which acts as an emollient. This will make the skin soft.
