Tulasi also known as Holy basil is a small plant grows to a height of about 80-90 cms height with green oval leaves giving an aromatic smell. The plant belongs to the family Lamiacea and Genus Ocimum. Two varieties are very popular Ocimum sanctum and Ocimum tenuiflorum both having the same properties. The plant with green leaves is known as Sri Tulasi and the plant with dark green and slightly reddish leaves is known as Krishna Tulasi.
Tulasi is a sacred plant for all Hindus and it is grown in every Hindu family houses and worshiped. Hindus believe worshiping of the plant strengthens the family bondage and keeps them safe. The leaves are also offered to God in the form of a garland. Beads made from the stems of Tulasi are used as Japa malas to chant the holy Hymns.

Tulasi is an adaptogenic helps to controls the stress, a powerful anti oxidant able to fight against free oxygen radicals and prevent cellular damage and acts as an immuno modulator to improve the immune response of the body. Because of these properties it is used in several Ayurvedic preparations.
