Amniocentesis – Prenatal Diagnosis of Genetic Disorders

‘Amniocentesis’ is a medical test for prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders in the fetuses. A small quantity of amniotic fluid is withdrawn in an aseptic manner and cultured in the genetic laboratory to investigate the chromosomal abnormalities. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – What is it? To whom it is done?

What is it? In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a treatment procedure of assisted reproductive technologies adapted to infertile couples to have a baby. ‘In Vitro’ means outside the body. So in this procedure the sperms and oocytes are fertilized outside the body in a laboratory dish. After fertilization of the oocytes the embryos are transferred on 3rd or 5th day for normal implantation and pregnancy. This procedure is rather expensive due to usage of hormones for down regulation and super ovulation.
