Uses and Sources of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which is chemically known as “Tocopherol” and is generally used in production of most of the cosmetic products.

Skin is mostly affected due to free radicals and the anti-oxidants which destroy these free radicals are present in large amounts in Vitamin E compared to other vitamins.

Vitamin E is called as “Lightening Rod” as it effectively prevents cell destruction. For this purpose it is used in cosmetics.

Vitamin E also protects the skin from harmful rays of the sun. This Vitamin is available as ampoules and also through food. It makes the skin healthier and beautiful. It is available as dietary supplements.

Sources of Vitamin E :

  • Cauliflower seeds
  • Almonds
  • Spinach
  • Tomato
  • Papaya
  • Olive oil
  • Mangoes
  • Cereals
  • Wheat germ oils

Daily requirement of Vitamin E:

Infants: upto 6 months : 4mg

                 7-12 months : 5mg

Children: 1-3 years : 6mg

                   4-8 years : 7mg

                   9-1 years : 11mg

Adults: above 14 years : 15mg

Deficiency of Vitamin E leads to:

  • Ataxia – impairment of movement
  • Impairement of immune response
  • Retinopathy – disease of retina which may lead to loss of vision
  • Skeletal myopathy- disorders of skeletal muscles
  • Myopathy- impairment of muscles
  • Spinocellular ataxia – neuro degenarative disorder
  • Peripheral neuropathy – disorder of peripheral neurons
  • Cardiovascular diseases
