Bihar has as many as 40 seats in the Lok Sabha. The ruling alliance there consisting of the Janata Dal (U) and the BJP had the lion share of the 40 seats thanks to the development wave created by the charismatic Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Bihar this time saw the two biggies like Laloo Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan losing bitterly. Laloo Prasad Yadav, the Union Railways Minister and the former Chief Minister of Bihar lost the election himself in Pataliputra. Laloo saved himself from a huge embarassment by just managing to become a MP. This was because he had also contested from Saran where he managed to beat a formidable opponent in Rajiv Pratap Rudy of the BJP. For Ram Vilas Paswan, the election results was a big insult to him as not only he lost the contest at Hajipur, his party – the Lok Janshakti Party failed to capture even a single seat! Laloo’s party on the other hand was silenced with just 4 MPs in hand.
Prior to the elections, Laloo Prasad Yadav and Ram Vilas Paswan had formed a fourth front alliance in Bihar and with Mulayam Singh’s Samajwadi Party in the Uttar Pradesh. The fourth front boasted that the Government at the Centre can only be made with the support of them. In Bihar, they gave just three seats for the Congress to contest which was taken as a humiliating gesture by the Sonia Gandhi led party. The Congress decided to contest on its own in Bihar and could win only 2 seats.
