Uttar Pradesh is the mother of all battle fields as far as the General Elections are concerned. The state has as many as 80 parliamentary seats with only Maharashtra coming a distant second with 48 seats. The Congress came up with a surprise tally here, a lot more than what was expected from it. The two regional parties – BSP and SP did not fare well to their expectations, it was particularly a debacle for the BSP as it has been the ruling party in UP.
The Politics of Uttar Pradesh saw a lot of heat generated in the last few days with the alleged hate speech of BJP’s new leader Varun Gandhi on the minorities which led the Chief Minister Mayawati to slap the NSA (National Security Act) on him to appease the Muslim voters.
The Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) principal opponent – the Samajwadi Party (SP) was in tatters with former Chief Minister and former BJP leader Kalyan Singh joining it which resulted in the loss of some Muslim vote share. There were internal party disputes with SP’s main leader Azam Khan clashing openly with another main leader Amar Singh. Mulayam Singh’s party was certainly not in good shape prior to the polls.
The Congress on the other hand had decided to break its past alliance with the Samajwadi Party and decided to go all out on its own. With the rest of the parties having their own problems, it was the Congress that emerged out succesfully much to everybody’s surprise.
The ruling BSP could bag just the 20 seats which was not the figure they were expecting especially when Mayawati was aiming to become the Prime Minister through the Third Front! The Samajwadi Party which floated the idea of a fourth front got the highest tally of 23 seats but they didn’t get enough numbers to hold the Congress in their fist in a possible future alliance.
It seems that the Congress family trio of Sonia Gandhi-Rahul Gandhi-Priyanka Vadra have wooed the UP voters succesfully in their favour. The Congress increased its 2004 tally of 9 seats to a whopping 21 seats in 2009! The NDA combine of BJP and Ajit Singh’s Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) picked up 15 seats, an improvement of 4 seats from the last elections.
