Slumdog Millionaire produced three individual Oscars for India with Music Maestro AR Rahman bagging two of them for Best Original Music Score and the Best Song (for Jai Ho) while the little known Resul Pookutty got an Oscar for Best Sound Mixing.AR Rahman had a great chance of winning the Oscar as two out of the three nominations in the Best Song were his. The other song of ARR apart from Jai Ho to be nominated was ‘O… Saya’. The Oscar for Jai Ho will be shared with veteran Hindi lyricist Gulzar for penning the lyrics, Gulzar though preferred to stay back home and watch the glory on the small screen.
AR Rahman: There is no need of any introduction about AR Rahman. It was in 1992 that a whizkid was born in the Indian film industry through a patriotic movie by ace director Mani Ratman in the form of Roja. That movie announced the arrival of a fresh breath of air in the otherwise dull and stagnant music industry; he was Allah Rakha Rahman, just 25 years of age at that time. The other whizkid making waves at that time in India was Sachin Tendulkar! Well like Jamal Malik of Slumdog Millionaire, Rahman (born as A. S. Dileep Kumar on January 6, 1967 in Madras, now Chennai) himself has had a fairy tale life, overcoming many difficulties in his childhood to become a legend in his field and besides that redefining Indian Film Music. Before Rahman had come, there were only a few really great music directors like Illayaraja. The Music industry was never that rich and the music was just used as fillers in the movies with some of the audiences taking a toilet or cigarette break whenever a song had come on the screen.
The best part of AR Rehman was that he has been very selective in picking movies which meant that he always tried to give his heart and soul for each track that he composed. He made people wait for his releases, especially his fans who would do everything to buy the cassette (now CDs) on the first day of the audio release. A lot of his fans would have a collection of all his albums irrespective of whether they understand Tamil, Telugu or Hindi and mind you without hearing the music at all before buying! Incredibly most of Rahman’s music sucks at the first hearing but on listening more and more it somehow manages to win the hearts of music lovers. The ‘Jai Ho’ song is a prime example of this. The reason could be that AR Rahman is always looking to experiment and come up with something very new most of the time.
The Slumdog Millionaire ironically is no way his best work but yet got him a couple of Oscars! Another irony is that ARR who takes months to compose an album took a damn two weeks to wrap up Slumdog Millionaire! Another fact is that the Best Song ‘Jai Ho’ was planned for the Bollywood Movie ‘Yuvvraj’ and it was a last minute twist to have it for ‘Slumdog Millionaire’. It is the same song, same music but a different fate all because it was a movie made by a non-Indian. AR Rahman fans and a billion Indians would take that anyway as atleast this exposes the finest talent of their country to millions across the globe. AR Rahman was with his beautiful wife ‘Sairo Bhano’ during the awards.
Lyrics of the Academy Award-winning song ‘Jai Ho’ which was sung by Sukhwinder Singh (of Chaiya Chaiya fame), Tanvi Shah and Mahalakshmi Iyer.
Jai Ho Jai Ho Jai Ho Jai Ho
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Ratti Ratti Sachi Maine Jaan Gavayi Hai
Nach Nach Koylo Pe Raat Bitayi Hai
Akhiyon Ki Neend Maine Phoonko Se Uda Di
Neele Neele Tare Maine Ungli Jalayi Hai
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Chakh Le Ho Chakh Le Ye Raat Shahad Hai Chakh Le
Rakh Le Haan Dil Hai Dil Aakhri Had Hai Rakh Le
Kala Kala Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na
Kala Kala Kajal Tera Koi Kala Jadoo Hai Na
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale, Jai Ho, Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho ….
Kab Se Ha Kab Se Jo Lab Pe Ruki Hai Keh De
Keh De Ha Keh De Ab Aankh Jhuki Hai.. Keh De
Aisi Aisi Roshan Aankhe Roshan Do Do Bhi Hai Hai Kya
Aaja Aaja Jind Shamiyane Ke Tale
Aaja Jariwale Nile Aasman Ke Tale
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
Jai Ho Jai Ho
