Dr Abdul Kalam subjected to security check at Delhi airport

Dr.Abdul Kalam, the former President of India was subjected to tight security check at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on April 24, 2009 by the ground staff of Continental Airlines when he was traveling to Newark on Continental Airlines flight CO 083. He was subjected to complete body check and asked to remove his footwear also violating the protocol. The continental Airlines security staff supported their act as a routine check as per the rules of the airlines and stated that there is no special rule to check for VIP or VVIP.

The Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel stated that necessary measures will be taken if anybody found guilty and tender an apology. He also stated that any Airlines operating in India is given with necessary guidelines with clear instructions that former Presidents are in the VIP list and that they are exempted from checks. This incident is not the first of its kind. It happened to Pranab Mukherjee also in Moscow Airport when he was traveling back to India.
