ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2009 – Aussie Women beat SA Women by 61 runs

Australia Women have defeated South Africa Women by 61 runs in the Group A Match at No 1 Sports Ground in Newcastle. Batting first having won the toss, the Aussies scored a solid 258 for 4 in the allotted 50 overs. South Africa in reply were bowled out for 197 in the final over.

For the Aussies, Skipper Karen Rolton top scored with an unbeaten 96 from 87 balls and opener Shelley Nitschke scored a solid 87. The pick of the bowlers for South Africa was Alicia Smith with 3 for 42 in 10 overs.

The South African chase had a good 2nd wicket partnership between Wicket Keeper and Opener Trisha Chetty (58) and Cri-zelda Brits (36) but the other batswomen couldn’t put up a fight. Shelley Nitschke, who made 87 chipped in with 3 for 43 in 10 overs for her left arm spin. She got the Player of the Match for her all-round efforts.
