England Women prevailed in a low-scoring final of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2009. They defeated New Zealand Women by 4 wickets with 23 balls to spare. Electing to bat first, New Zealand Women were bowled out for 166 in 47.2 overs. Their top scorer was Lucy Doolan who scored 48 coming in at no.9. Skipper Haidee Tiffen scored 30 at the top of the order. For England, Nicki Shaw claimed four wickets.
England had a great platform to win the match with an opening start of 74. Although they kept on losing wickets at regular intervals, the target of 167 was just not big enough to cause an upset. Opener Caroline Atkins was the top scorer with 40 while her partner Sarah Taylor scored 39. Lucy Doolan took three wickets for the Kiwis but her efforts went in vain.
The Player of the Match was given to Nicki Shaw for her destructive bowling. The big award of Player of the Tournament went to the 19-year-old Wicket Keeper cum opener Sarah Taylor of England Women.
