The Prime Minister of India is the most powerful person in the country in practice although it is the President in theory. It is the Prime Minister who calls the shots in India. The Prime Minister or in short the P.M heads the Council of Ministers to exercise the authority of the Government of India. The P.M. is appointed by the President after it is proved that he/she is the leader of the majority party in the Parliament. Currently the Prime Minister of India is Dr.Manmohan Singh, who is the 17th P.M. of India. The ruling party is the United Progressive Alliance (U.P.A) which is led by the Indian National Congress. The Prime Minister has a term of 5 years but there are occasions when he/she has to resign after losing the trust-vote (in other words, not able to prove his/her majority in the Parliament). The official residence of the Prime Minister of India is at 7, Race course road, New Delhi.
