The second ODI at Wellington was abandoned due to persistent rain. India would consider itself unlucky having got to a strong position of 188 for 4 in the 29th over. The match started on time but saw a total of three rain interruptions. The contest was cut short to 34 overs after the second rain break.
India rode on a superb opening stand from Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar. Sehwag blasted his way to 54 from just 36 balls (with 9 fours and a six) before he got a totally rubbish caught behind decision from local umpire Evan Watkins. Sachin Tendulkar went onto make a solid 61 from 69 balls which included 7 fours and a hook shot for a six. The master blaster made the mistake of sweeping a full length ball from Vettori. The Kiwis fought back in the game by sending Yuvraj Singh back to the pavilion for a duck.
Before rain could put a permanent end to the match, Gautam Gambhir fell holing out in the deep having made a decent 30 from 36 balls. The southpaw had come in at no.3. By close of the match, MS Dhoni remained unbeaten on 23 from 19 and Suresh Raina got 13 from 8 balls as India approached the slog overs. Daniel Vettori was the pick of the bowlers with a tidy 1 for 14 in 3 overs.
The Kiwis had made one change by bringing in wicket keeper Peter McGlashan in the place of Neil Broom. Brendon McCullum was played like a pure batsman. India remained unchanged for this game and they lead this 5-ODI National Bank Series 1-0. The third ODI is at Christchurch on Sunday.
