Prime Ministers of India – Gulzarilal Nanda

Gulzarilal Nanda served as the acting Prime Minister of India on two occassions, first after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru and second after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Although most text books in India state that Lal Bahadur Shastri is the second Prime Minister, technically it has to be Gulzarilal Nanda. This is because in the Indian Constitution, there is no position of acting Prime Minister although there is a provision for an acting President.

Well Gulzarilal Nanda was the Prime Minister for a total of just 26 days, two terms of 13 days each. The late Gulzarilal Nanda was a receipent of the Bharat Ratna award in 1997. The unbelievable fact about Gulzarilal Nanda is that he is the only Prime Minister not to have a own house which reflects his honest nature as a Politician, one that can rarely be matched! Another interesting fact is that he lived for 99 years just like another Prime Minister Morarji Desai!
