Pamulaparthi Venkata Narasimha Rao (in short P.V.Narasimha Rao) is the first Prime Minister to hail from South India and the first and only one till date to emerge from the state of Andhra Pradesh in this post. The late Narasimha Rao was the 12th Prime Minister of India. He became the P.M. after the Congress-I rode on the sympathy wave created by the Rajiv Gandhi assasination in 1991 which coincided with the general elections during that time. P.V.Narasimha Rao was also the 4th Chief Mnister of Andhra Pradesh between 1971 and 1973.
P.V.Narasimha Rao is regarded as ‘Father of Indian Economic Reforms’ in India. He also has the distinction of enterting the Guinness Book Of World Records for winning an election with the most majority, Narasimha Rao had won with a majority of 500,000 votes from the Nandyal constituency. He was helped though by the then chief opposition party in Andhra Pradesh – with the Telugu Desam Party under N.T.Rama Rao deciding not to put up any candidate against Narasimha Rao in that by-election considering that it was a matter of pride for the Telugu people to see a fellow Telugu in becoming the Prime Minister for the first time in history. Narasimha Rao did have his ugly moments during his P.M. tenure which included the infamous demolition of the Babri Masjid (Mosque) and the following communal riots.
