Andhra Pradesh (A.P) is a State in Southern India and was carved out as a home to Telugu speaking people on November 1st, 1956. This southern state lies on the east coast of India and has its borders with Maharashtra, Chattisgarh and Orissa on the North, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on the South. Andhra Pradesh has been a huge producer of rice in the country. With two big rivers in Krishna and Godavari flowing across the state along with 17 other smaller rivers making agriculture as the backbone of this state. Andhra Pradesh is the fourth largest state in the country and has a population of more than 76 million.
The most visited place in Andhra Pradesh has got to be the pilgrimage city of Tirupati which leads to the Lord Venkateshwara Temple located in the hill town of Tirumala. Close to 1 lakh people come over to Tirumala to have a glimpse of Lord Venkateshwara in this 10th century temple which makes it the most visited holy place in the world! Andhra Pradesh also has the reputation of having the second biggest film industry in the country known as Tollywood – the name given for the Telugu Cinema industry and it produces nearly 150 movies every year!
The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh is Kiran Kumar Reddy and the ruling party is Congress-I. The main opposition party is Telugu Desam Party. The Governor of the state is Narasimhan.
The state of Andhra Pradesh has a long coastline of 972 kms along the Bay of Bengal. A.P. is divided into 23 districts. The capital of Andhra Pradesh is Hyderabad which is located in the north of the state. Traditionally the state has been divided into three regions – Coastal Andhra or simply Andhra (includes all the districts lying along the coast of Bay of Bengal), Rayalaseema (consists of four southern districts towards the west) and Telangana (includes 9 districts in the northern and central part of the state including the Capital City Hyderabad). The people in each of these three regions have their unique telugu dialect and cultures.
