Gulzarilal Nanda served as the acting Prime Minister of India on two occassions, first after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru and second after the death of Lal Bahadur Shastri. Although most text books in India state that Lal Bahadur Shastri is the second Prime Minister, technically it has to be Gulzarilal Nanda. The Prime Minister of India is the most powerful person in the country in practice although it is the President in theory. It is the Prime Minister who calls the shots in India. The Prime Minister or in short the P.M heads the Council of Ministers to exercise the authority of the Government of India. The P.M. is appointed by the President after it is proved that he/she is the leader of the majority party in the Parliament.
